Long Beach’s newest City Council member, Les Robbins, took office Tuesday, slightly more than a month after he won a special election to fill the 5th District seat vacated when Ernie Kell was elected mayor last June.

Robbins, 39, is a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who directs a 5,500-member law enforcement union, the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs.
