The California Commission on Judicial Performance announced that it has ordered a formal hearing on allegations of misconduct against Harbor Municipal Judge Calvin P. Schmidt--Orange County’s longest-sitting judge. It was the second announcement in two months by the usually secretive commission of an investigation involving an Orange County judge. On Oct. 13, the commission announced a similar hearing would be held for Harbor Municipal Judge Brian R. Carter, 63. Though the exact nature of the hearings has not been disclosed, there have been reports that the commission is investigating allegations against the judges that include courtroom favors for friends and trading favoritism for sex. A commission statement said: “It has been reported in the media that Judge Calvin P. Schmidt . . . is the subject of commission proceedings. This is to confirm that the commission . . . has ordered formal proceedings concerning Calvin P. Schmidt.”
