A California First Bank branch in San Carlos was robbed Thursday afternoon, bringing the total of bank robberies in San Diego this year to a record 130.

The robbery occurred when a man walked into the bank at 8630 Lake Murray Blvd. at 1:25 p.m. and handed a teller a note that read: “Hand over your money. Your life is at stake,” according to police spokesman Bill Robinson. The robber then ran away with $2,112, Robinson said.

Five hours later, the FBI arrested a suspect. Police Officer Thorne Parker said Steve Ruby, 39, was taken into custody after the FBI received a tip through the Crime Stoppers program. An FBI spokesman declined to comment on the arrest.

Because of the wide variance in descriptions given by witnesses, police have been unable to determine whether the suspect was one of at least two serial bank robbers who have been operating in the San Diego area, Robinson said.

Also Thursday, authorities announced the arrest of a woman in a string of bank robberies. The woman was captured after a holdup Wednesday.

In that robbery, a woman robbed the Security Pacific Bank branch at 417 Santa Fe Drive in Encinitas and was chased by witnesses, said a Sheriff’s Department spokesman. The witnesses did not catch the robber but did give deputies a description of her and her car, which was later seen heading south on Interstate 805.

Tanya Lynn Kimber, 28, was stopped by deputies on the freeway near the Governor Drive exit and arrested without incident, said FBI spokesman Bob Watkins. Kimber is a suspect in bank robberies in San Diego, Oceanside, Carlsbad and Orange County, Watkins said.
