Local News in Brief : Pact to Let Work on Hotel Resume

Share

The Compton City Council struck an agreement Thursday with state labor officials that will allow work to resume on a $30-million hotel project that is the centerpiece of the city’s redevelopment efforts.

The agreement will sharply reduce a $3.3-million freeze on construction funds to Tucon Development Co., the contractor for the Compton Lazben Hotel. The state Department of Industrial Relations ordered the freeze last month after an investigation revealed that the company failed to pay some workers the state-required prevailing wage.

City officials had argued that the 300-room hotel and convention center along the Artesia Freeway is not required to pay prevailing wages.

Department Director Ron Rinaldi said he agreed to reduce the freeze to $338,304 because he believes that the back-wages can be recovered from Tucon.
