The Los Angeles Public Library has been awarded a $1-million grant to help enlarge its humanities collection, the National Endowment for the Humanities announced Thursday.

The grant is designed to help attract additional funds from private and non-federal government sources. It is part of $15.5 million in challenge grants awarded to 35 educational and cultural institutions in 23 states.

The Los Angeles library is matching the grant with $3 million from other donors, whom library officials said they will identify later.

Although the local library has received three National Endowment for the Humanities grants for specific purposes over the last four years, this is its first challenge grant. One of the previous awards was a $30,000 emergency grant after the devastating fire of April 29, 1986.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency supporting research, scholarship, education and general audience programs in the humanities.
