Nordiques Hire Ex-Canadiens Coach Perron

QUEBEC — Jean Perron, former coach of the Montreal Canadiens, today was named coach of the Quebec Nordiques.
Perron, 42, who became Quebec’s assistant general manager during the summer a couple of months after being fired by Montreal, replaces Ron Lapointe, who stepped down Thursday because of a kidney tumor.
Lapointe, who became coach of Quebec Dec. 4, 1987, when Andre Savard was fired, had an overall record of 33-50-6. This season, Quebec is 11-20-2 and in last place in the Adams Division.
Perron spent three years as coach of Montreal, winning the Stanley Cup in 1985-86, his rookie season.
Lapointe learned of his condition Thursday and was advised by team physician Dr. Pierre Beauchemin not to work the game that night against Montreal.
Lapointe badgered team General Manager Martin Madden to allow him to work the game, however, and Madden acquiesced. Quebec won 6-4.
