World Boxing Assn. Will Not Sanction Kalambay-Nunn Bout

The World Boxing Assn. has refused to sanction the Las Vegas title fight March 25 between its middleweight champion, Sumbu Kalambay of Italy, and Michael Nunn of North Hollywood, the International Boxing Federation middleweight titleholder.

Instead, according to Elias Cordova, president of the WBA championship committee, Kalambay must defend against Herol Graham of Great Britain, the No. 1 contender in the WBA rankings. Going into the ring against Nunn could cost Kalambay his title, Cordova said.

However, promoter Bob Arum is trying to salvage matters by reaching a compromise with Graham, according to Bruce Trampler, a spokesman for Arum’s Top Rank boxing organization. If Graham steps aside, he will be given a sum of money and a fight Feb. 24 on the undercard of the middleweight title fight between Iran Barkley, the World Boxing Council champion, and challenger Roberto Duran. Graham will also be given a bout on the Kalambay-Nunn undercard.

And after the winners of those title fights meet next summer, Graham will be given a shot at the winner.
