The Communist Cultural Thaw Continues: State film censors in China held their first open meeting ever, and promptly approved for release a controversial movie about a young man who cannot cope with China’s new competition and commits suicide, an official paper said Thursday. The censors decided that the movie, tentatively titled “Transmigration,” can be released uncut to Chinese theaters, the Guangming Daily said. The movie is directed by Huang Jianxin and produced by the Xian Film Studio, which in recent years has produced China’s most technically innovative and politically daring films. The paper’s report of the censors’ meeting did not say if all such meetings would be open in the future.
