The “Ninth annual Lou Rawls Parade of Stars”--hosted by Rawls, naturally--raised more than $9.4 million in pledges for the United Negro College Fund during its seven-hour broadcast Saturday night on KTLA-TV Channel 5. More than 50 stars stopped by the telethon’s soundstage--including Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, Neil Sedaka, Ben Vereen, Aretha Franklin and even Bob Hope--and taped messages from Michael Jackson and President Ronald Reagan were aired. And the people at the fund-raising organization are still looking forward to the show’s broadcast in 11 other areas, including San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, St. Louis and Baltimore, on Dec. 30. Telethon officials said that telephone lines will be open until the show has been televised in all of the target areas.
