G. Mitchell Wilk was named president of the California Public Utilities Commission for a one-year term beginning Jan. 1. He succeeds Stanley W. Hulett, 50, who served two terms as president and who remains a commissioner.

Wilk, 41, was named to the five-member regulatory body two years ago by Gov. George Deukmejian, whom he had served as a staff aide. Before that, he was responsible for governmental relations for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Cos. He earned degrees in finance and economics at American University in Washington.

The PUC regulates California’s investor-owned utilities.
