Local News in Brief : $700,000 Given to Support AIDS Work

Three Los Angeles area agencies have been awarded grants totaling more than $700,000 by a New Jersey-based foundation supporting efforts to prevent the spread of AIDS and to care for those stricken.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation gave $382,659 to the All Saints AIDS Service Center Corp. in Pasadena to provide comprehensive AIDS services and education in the western San Gabriel Valley; $137,909 to the East Los Angeles Rape Hotline for an AIDS prevention program for Latino youths, and $243,710 to the JWCH Institute Inc. for an education and outreach program on AIDS for homeless people in the Skid Row area.

In all, the Princeton, N.J., private foundation made 54 grants totaling more than $16.6 million to community organizations, hospitals and health departments to combat acquired immunity deficiency syndrome in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

Another Southern California recipient was the UC San Diego School of Medicine, which was awarded $277,456 for a computerized program to improve the medical management of persons in San Diego infected with the virus that can lead to AIDS.
