A California company is one of 25 in 13 states against which the Environmental Protection Agency plans to levy fines totaling nearly $1.5 million for failing to report chemical emissions before a deadline required by a new law. The EPA said it plans a fine of $34,000 against United States Can Co. of San Leandro for alleged emission of lead compounds and glycol ether compounds. Almost half the penalties would be accounted for by one plant, Inland Steel Co.’s works at East Chicago, Ind., which was accused of failing to report emissions of 33 different substances. Inland’s proposed fine was set at $721,000.
