Local News in Brief : Countywide : Former Governor Brown Campaigns in County

Share

Former California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. asked Orange County Democrats on Tuesday to elect him chairman of the state’s Democratic Party.

Brown appeared at the Santa Ana home of attorney Michael Balmages in one of several informal gatherings of Democrats around the state that he hopes will provide the impetus for a political comeback.

Balmages, who is campaigning for chairmanship of Orange County’s Democratic Party, said he invited Brown because he assumed the meeting at his home would be a convenient way for Brown to express his views to local Democrats.

Steve Westly, a San Francisco investment banker who is running against Brown for the party’s state chairmanship, also attended.

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley also was on hand to lend support to Balmages’ bid for the county post.
