Border Officers Kill 2 Bandits
Two men believed to be border bandits were shot to death shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, after they opened fire on police and Border Patrol agents just north of the international border, authorities said.
Other assailants were involved in the shooting, but authorities, late Wednesday night, did not know the number or whether any had been arrested.
Police said members of the Border Crime Prevention Unit, a joint force of the San Diego Police Department and the Border Patrol, were fired on by two border bandits near Dairy Mart and Monument roads in San Ysidro.
Police returned the fire, and one man was killed immediately, police said. The other was dying as paramedics arrived, they said. The two were shooting from the south levee of the Tijuana River, police said. Homicide detectives and deputies from the San Diego County coroner’s office were called.
