Man Gets Nine Years for Piggy Bank Theft

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A burglar who stole an old plastic piggy bank stuffed with $75 in change has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Palm Beach Circuit Judge Howard Berman cited Henry Hatten’s previous felony convictions before issuing the sentence Wednesday, ending a trial in which jurors giggled when prosecutors introduced the piggy bank as evidence.
Hatten took the bank on July 15, three weeks after completing his fourth prison sentence in 10 years. The owner said she had bought the bank for her son’s savings after he was born, almost 32 years ago.
