‘Discovering’ Sports

While I am certain the story was written with good intentions, I fear it may have done more damage than good by sending some subtle but devastating messages about the gay community.

Reporter David Haldane, or an editor, did not include information about the vast array of athletic teams that have been active in the gay community for years. Two international competitions have been mounted, and a third “Gay Games” is planned in Vancouver in 1990.

Haldane’s story makes it sound as if it took a government-funded program to get gay men out of the bars and into what he calls “positive recreational activities.”

I might take this opportunity to mention that lesbians and gays have also formed myriad other organizations that provide alternatives to bars and drinking. They include political clubs, business organizations and social groups that sponsor camping, skiing and activities for couples.
