Local News in Brief : Irvine : UCI Engineering School Gets Challenge Grant
UC Irvine’s School of Engineering has been given a $200,000 “challenge grant” from the Kresge Foundation of Troy, Mich.
The money will be used to help build and equip the $4.25-million, 11,000-square-foot engineering center and auditorium currently under construction on campus, UCI officials said.
“The terms of the challenge grant will provide an incentive for the project’s completion by requiring that the remaining construction and equipment funds needed, $700,000, be raised before June 1, 1989,” UCI spokesman Scott Nelson said.
William Sirignano, UCI dean of engineering, added, “The Kresge Foundation challenge will provide a tremendous opportunity for the school of engineering and its constituents to enhance private support for the project.”
Construction on the engineering center and auditorium began in March with $2 million in campus funds. In addition, about $1.5 million has been raised so far from private contributions.
The new center will be the headquarters for the school of engineering and will house most of its administrative offices and conference rooms.
