Barkley Leads 76ers’ Win Over Bullets

Charles Barkley scored 25 points in only 22 minutes and Mike Gminski had 24 points as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Washington Bullets, 125-110, Sunday night.

Barkley shot 8 for 8 from the field and had 6 of his 12 rebounds when the 76ers built a 41-29 first-quarter lead. The closest the Bullets came the first quarter was 7 points.

With the score, 11-11, Philadelphia went on a 19-5 run to take a 30-16 lead with 4:19 left in the first period. The 76ers led 71-55 halftime and 93-77 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Barkley scored 21 in the first period, tying a club record set by Julius Erving. He had four in the second quarter and was taken out with 4 personal fouls with 2:31 left in the third period and didn’t return. Barkley made all 9 of his shots.

Philadelphia’s Gerald Henderson scored a season-high 20 points and Ron Anderson had 19.

The Bullets were led by Jeff Malone’s 21 and Bernard King’s 19.

The victory was the third in the last eight games for Philadelphia; Washington lost its ninth of the last 11.

The 76ers made 8 three-point shots, breaking a club record of 7 set last week against Dallas.

In the second period, the Bullets managed to slow Barkley, but they couldn’t stop the rest of the 76ers, led by Henderson who had 10 points in the quarter.

The closest Washington got was 46-39 with 8:27 left in the half.

Philadelphia ran off a 15-6 spurt, including eight straight points, to lead 61-43 with 3:57 left.

John Williams’ 10 points led the Bullets in the second period.

Washington came to within 11, at 74-63, with 7:31 remaining in the third period. But the 76ers scored 7 straight points to gain an 18-point lead, 81-63.
