Local News in Brief : Children Urged to Give Up War Toys

Share

A campaign to get children to exchange toy guns for teddy bears got under way in Venice on Monday, marking the second year the Alliance for Survival has undertaken such a project.

“We’re letting people know today that the whole issue of war toys should be dealt with all year long, not only during the holidays,” director Jerry Rubin said. “We’re also concerned about the negative impact (toy guns have) on children’s emotional health.”

Rubin urged children, or their parents, to drop off or mail toy guns and other “realistic war toys,” along with $1 for postage, to the alliance’s headquarters at 13 Sunset Ave., Venice, 90291.

In return, they will receive bears supplied by the San Francisco-based Dakin toy company, Rubin said, adding that the firm contributed 1,000 of the 5-inch stuffed animals last year.
