STATE : Cold Kills Man Near Reagan Ranch
Subfreezing temperatures killed a 73-year-old transient as he slept in an avocado orchard five miles from President Reagan’s mountaintop ranch, a coroner’s official said today.
“It was quite cold in that canyon area, and he was only wearing light clothes and only had a thin blanket,” Deputy Santa Barbara County Coroner Dennis Prescott said. He said the man’s name was being withheld until relatives in the Los Angeles area could be notified.
The body of the 90-pound man, who was in poor health, was found Tuesday on Refugio Canyon Road, which leads to the Reagan ranch. The President has been vacationing at his new estate in Los Angeles’ posh Bel-Air district.
