IN BRIEF : Jockey Ray Dies of Pneumonia
Veteran jockey Lonnie Ray, who won several riding titles in the 1960s and 1970s, died Monday of pneumonia. He was 41.
Ray, who was suspended from racing in the early 1980s after being caught carrying an illegal electronic device in Florida, had launched a comeback bid this past season. He rode at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw, the Midway Downs in Stroud and at Remington Park in Oklahoma City.
During the off-season, Ray was working at Timberlake Farm exercising horses for Terry Barnes.
Ray collected riding trophies from Sportsman’s Park in 1970 and 1971 and from Oaklawn Park in 1968 and 1971.
Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ray’s hometown of Berryville, Ark.
