Arcadia : $1 Fee for Trash Recycling
Homeowners whose garbage is picked up at curb side will be charged a monthly $1 recycling fee whether or not they take part in a volunteer program.
Beginning March 1, homeowners can opt to put garbage into separate containers for glass, aluminum and newspapers.
The recycling fee will not be charged to homeowners who have back-yard garbage pickups and owners of apartments or condominiums unless they decide to take part in the curb-side recycling program.
“A single-family household has a better potential for recycling,” said Alex McIntyre, an assistant to the city manager. Single-family homeowners generally have more space for storing the three free recycling crates that Best Disposal will distribute to customers, he said.
Under proposed rates in the new contract with Best, monthly bills for the average single-family customer will jump from $7.87 to $8.45, a 7.4% increase. The amount includes the recycling fee.
Final rates under a new contract with Best Disposal will be reviewed by the City Council at a public hearing Jan. 3.
