A beachfront pump station in Pacific Beach lost power for about an hour Wednesday night, causing thousands of gallons of raw sewage to flow into the ocean, the county Department of Health Services reported.

Pump Station No. 18, at the foot of Loring Street, lost power about 6:30 p.m. for an unknown reason, a spokesman said.

About 5,000 gallons of sewage escaped into the water before the pump system was restarted at 7:20 p.m., he said.

The area surrounding the sewage spill was posted as unsafe for swimming or diving, and will remain closed until sampling of the water shows it is no longer contaminated, the spokesman said.
