Share

Special police patrols, which targeted intoxicated drivers in the South Bay during the Christmas holiday, arrested 137 people on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to police agencies. In addition, the patrols issued 55 citations to motorists for driving irregularities, including speeding and illegal lane changes.

The statistics were chalked up between Dec. 19 and Dec. 27 by a police task force that set up one checkpoint, and two others that operated roving DUI patrols.

One roving task force included officers from the South Los Angeles California Highway Patrol, Lennox sheriff’s station and police departments in El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. Special DUI units from the Lomita sheriff’s station patrolled Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates and Rolling Hills on Christmas weekend.

According to the agencies, four DUI arrests were made at a checkpoint in El Segundo and the remainder by the roving patrols within jurisdictions covered by the various law enforcement agencies. Torrance police planned two checkpoints, but both were scrapped because of rain.

Patrols are continuing through New Year’s Day.
