Story Brings 2 Victims to Life as Human Beings

Times Staff Writer Jesse Katz should be commended for a fine job on the Dec. 15 article, “Living on Appeal,” the story of convicted murderer Alejandro Gilbert Ruiz.

I am the oldest daughter of Pauline Wachs (one of Ruiz’s victims). After 8 years, bringing this back into the media frightened me. My opinion of reporters was not a good one. But when he came to my house and interviewed me, Jesse was unusually understanding. He made me feel like I was talking it over with an old friend.

I want to thank him and the Los Angeles Times for not revealing where I am and for finally bringing to life my mother and brother as human beings--not just “two victims” in another murder.
