From Times wire service reports

More than 100 police officers will patrol Hollywood Boulevard on New Year’s Eve in an effort to prevent a repeat of the Halloween rioting that left nine people hurt and several stores damaged, officials said today.

Police Capt. Rick Batson said police do not expect crowds as large as the one that turned rowdy and began smashing windows on Halloween night. “It’s not a night that people go out on the street and party,” Batson said. “It’s not like New York. It’s not like Times Square. People (in Los Angeles) go to organized indoor events.”
