TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE FLOAT FACTS

Monday’s Tournament of Roses Parade will feature two floats from Orange County: a city-sponsored entry from Santa Ana that celebrates the 100th birthday of Orange County, and a corporate entry from Newport Beach-based Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co. and its family of subsidiaries, Pacific Financial Cos. Following is a list of facts on each float:

SANTA ANA

Theme: “Celebrate Our Spirit.”

Float builder: C.E. Bent & Son Inc.

Float designer: Jim Barrowman.

Depicts: Exploding fireworks.

Fresh materials: Bleriot orchids, golden shower orchids, yellow pompons, white phaleonopsis orchids, dichondra, several varieties of roses and other flowers.

Dried materials: Rice, corn husk, Chinese lentil seeds, straw flowers and other materials.

PACIFIC MUTUAL

Theme: “Celebrating the Performing Arts.”

Float builder: Floatmasters.

Float designers: Raul Rodriguez and Rick Chapman.

Depicts: Procession from the opera “Aida,” with two elephants, a panther and snow leopard (each 23 feet long).

Fresh materials: More than 150 varieties, including Madame Pompadour orchids, white cattleya orchids, starburst mums, carnations and carinella, lavender and pink roses.

Dried materials: A variety of seeds, leaves, seaweed and dried petals.

INGREDIENTS: All exposed surfaces on Rose Parade floats must be completely covered with natural materials.
