IN RETROSPECT 1988 : THE YEAR IN STATISTICS
THE HIGHWAYS
In 1988, 79,300 vehicle hours were wasted daily on congested freeways (a 3.8% increase over 1987). Traffic on state highways in Los Angeles County increased 4.5%. Accidents in Los Angeles County decreased 1.3% but fatalities increased 0.8%. Vehicles registered this year: 6,057,648, up by 2%.
THE POOR
Monthly average of homeless general relief applicants receiving emergency lodging through October: 5,080, an increase of 9%; Monthly average of recipients of Aid to Families With Dependent Children: 552,800, a decrease of 5%; Monthly average of general relief recipients: 41,100, up by 3%.
CRIME
Homicides in city of Los Angeles through Dec. 7: 700, compared to 783 a year ago. Of these, 236 were gang-related through November, compared to 180 the year before. Homicides in county sheriff’s jurisdiction through November: 245, compared 271 a year ago. Of these, 86 were gang-related, up by 12.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Total days ozone levels exceeded federal standards through October: 172; for all of 1987: 160. Total household solid waste disposed of in the county in 1988: 1,449,458 tons, up by 40,000 tons.
