Guatemalan authorities charged a 22-year-old ferry captain with negligent homicide after his 30-ton vessel, overcrowded with New Year’s travelers, sank off the Caribbean coast, killing 78 people; 46 survived. The skipper, Juan Pablo Esquivel, was arrested after authorities found that 124 people were aboard the ferry, authorized to carry 90, and that no life preservers were on board. In Brazil, meanwhile, rescue workers ended their search for survivors of an excursion ship that capsized off Rio de Janeiro on New Year’s Eve, drowning at least 53 revelers, with more than 50 believed still missing. The number on board was not known but may have totaled as many as 150.
