Dave Bristol, a former Cincinnati Reds manager who was the Philadelphia Phillies’ third base coach last season, has been hired as Cincinnati’s third base coach for 1989, the Reds announced today.

Bristol, 55, who was the Reds’ manager from 1966 to 1969, was Philadelphia’s third base coach until mid-season in 1988, when he was fired along with Phillies manager Lee Elia. The Reds said Bristol will be assigned uniform No. 4, the same number he wore when he managed the Reds.

He will replace Bruce Kimm, who left the Reds in November to become a bench coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bristol also managed at Milwaukee (1970-72), Atlanta (1976-77) and San Francisco (1979-80), compiling a 658-764 record.

Bristol’s new boss, Reds manager Pete Rose, played for Bristol in the major leagues and the minor leagues. Bristol was a manager in the Reds’ farm system for nine years before taking over the Reds in July, 1966, when Don Heffner was fired as manager. Bristol guided the Reds to a 39-38 record and a seventh-place finish.
