Pacific 10 Roundup : Stanford Surprises No. 8 Arizona, 83-78

Todd Lichti scored 35 points, and Brian McSweeney sank 3 free throws with 4 seconds left as Stanford upset eighth-ranked Arizona, 83-78, Thursday night in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Palo Alto.

The Cardinal (9-3 overall, 2-1 in the Pac-10) fell behind, 21-4, in the opening minutes but rallied to pull within 40-34 by halftime.

Stanford took the lead, 54-53, on a field goal by Eric Reveno with 12:40 left. Stanford built its lead to 9 points as Lichti scored 11 consecutive points in a 4-minute stretch to make it 71-62 with 5:10 left.

Arizona (8-2, 3-1) staged a comeback of its own and came within 80-78 before Harvey Mason missed a pair of free throws with 4 seconds left that would have tied the score.

It was the second straight year that Stanford has upset Arizona at home. Last season, the Cardinal handed the Wildcats their only conference loss in 18 games.

California 84, Arizona State 60--Leonard Taylor scored 21 of his 28 points as the Bears made 71.4% of their shots in the first half en route to a rout of the Sun Devils at Berkeley.

Taylor made 9 of 12 shots, and Cal (11-3, 2-1) made 20 of 28 to build a 47-28 halftime lead. It was the Bears’ 10th win in their last 11 games.

Mark Becker scored 20 points for Arizona State (7-4, 1-2).
