Local News in Brief : 237 Drivers Arrested Over Holidays

A total of 237 people were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays by special units fielded by South Bay police agencies, authorities said.

An additional 131 motorists received citations for offenses such as speeding and illegal lane changes.

The infractions were recorded between Dec. 19 and Jan. 1 by law-enforcement teams that set up checkpoints and operated roving patrols.

One team included officers from the South Los Angeles California Highway Patrol, Lennox sheriff’s station and police departments in El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. Units from the Lomita sheriff’s station were hired by Palos Verdes Peninsula cities to patrol Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates and Rolling Hills on Christmas and New Year’s weekends.
