An estimated 6,000 people have starved to death in the past three weeks in war-torn southern Sudan, and thousands more are at risk unless food arrives soon, a Khartoum newspaper reported. International aid officials in the region said the figures sounded high, but confirmed that the situation is grave in wide areas of Sudan where government soldiers and civilians are trapped in fighting with the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army. The newspaper Al Ayam said the death toll in the south is close to levels reached before a food airlift started last fall.
