Only $7,000 was needed of the $25,000 made available by the Republican Party to help pay staff costs during Vice President-elect Dan Quayle’s December ski vacation, a spokesman for Quayle said. Jim Carroll said none of the $25,000 made available to the vice president-elect by the Republican National Committee was used to pay personal expenses for Quayle or his family during the Christmastime ski trip to Vail, Colo. Carroll said the money was used for staff expenses and phone costs only and that Quayle paid all personal costs and family expenses from his own funds. The two aides who accompanied Quayle and his family handled advance work, logistics and helped “keep people at bay,” Quayle said in an interview.
