Beverly Hills : Former Mayors Honored

As part of the Beverly Hills Diamond Jubilee celebration commemorating the city’s 75th anniversary, the City Council Tuesday honored 13 former mayors who served the city from 1951 to 1987.

The honored mayors were Dean Olson, who served from 1951 to 1952; Leonard Horwin, 1964-65; Frederic A. Leopold, 1967-68 and 1971-72; George Slaff, 1968-69 and 1975-76; Richard A. Stone, 1972-73 and 1977-78; Dr. Charles Aronberg, 1974-75 and 1979-80; Donna Ellman, 1976-77 and 1981-82, and Joseph N. Tilem, 1978-79.

Also honored were Edward I. Brown, 1980-81 and 1985-86; Benjamin H. Stansbury Jr., 1982-83 and 1987-88; Benjamin Norton, 1983-84; Annabelle Heiferman, 1984-85, and Charlotte Spadaro, 1986-87.

The council also honored the widow of Jack Freeman, who was mayor from 1961 to 1962, and the widow of Jacob M. Stuchen, mayor from 1966 to 1967 and from 1970 to 1971. In addition, the council honored nine former city treasurers and current treasurer Benjamin Sanford.

In all, there have been 33 different mayors and 54 different council members since the City Council was established in 1928. A five-member Board of Trustees governed the city for 14 years after the city’s incorporation in 1914.
