Newhall Site Becomes Nursery for Baby Oaks

Share

Hundreds of oak trees have been chopped down to make way for new subdivisions in the Santa Clarita Valley.

But on Thursday, Los Angeles County foresters began planting 500 oaks on a three-acre plot next to the Hidden Valley subdivision in Newhall.

Fire officials hope the experimental plantings will provide foresters and ultimately homeowners with better information on the care of fragile oak trees. A second aim is to help reduce the threat of fire by planting the fire-resistant trees in the dry expanse of chaparral.

The county foresters will try various planting and watering techniques to determine the optimum conditions for oak seedlings.
