Maccabi of Tel Aviv upset a Soviet Army squad, 97-92, in a European Championship Cup basketball game at Moscow, to the cheers of hundreds of Soviet Jews at the game. About 2 million Israelis watched on television.

“This is joy, this is happiness,” said Merab Detrokalashuvili, 38, from the Soviet republic of Georgia.

Ken Barlow, one of four American players on the Israeli team, put the game away for Maccabi with a short jumper in the final seconds.
