A New York investor has acquired 31% of Plaza Communications Inc., an Irvine financial publishing concern. Theodore L. Cross, a New York publisher of legal textbooks, increased his stake in Plaza from 26% to 31% during the fourth quarter ended Oct. 31, 1988, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Tolman Geffs, Plaza Communications chief executive and founder, controls 51% of the company’s stock. Plaza Communications publishes Personal Investor, a monthly magazine with 119,000 subscribers, and Registered Representative, a trade magazine distributed to stock brokers. Last year the company earned $151,000 on sales of $1.5 million.
