A husband and wife suffered smoke inhalation and their four cats died in an early morning fire Friday at an apartment complex in the 1400 block of East Grove Avenue, firefighters said.

The fire was reported about 6 a.m., according to Richard Alarcon, an investigator for the Orange Fire Department. Alarcon said the residents of an upstairs apartment, Saundra and Joseph Lojacono, suffered smoke inhalation and were treated and released at St. Joseph Hospital.

The blaze was apparently started by a portable heater in the Lojaconos’ apartment, Alarcon said. There was some water damage to a lower apartment, but fire damage was confined to the Lojaconos’ residence. Alarcon estimated $50,000 total damage to apartments and contents.
