LEVERT

“Just Coolin’.” Atlantic: ** 1/2

On its third album since 1986, LeVert proves that Philadelphia soul is alive and kickin’. The trio includes two sons of the O’Jays’ Eddie Levert, and the group Levert sounds like a clone of that veteran, Philly-based group. If you subscribe to the belief that too much of a good thing can be wonderful, the similarities may delight you. Lead vocalist Gerald Levert most resembles his father on “Gotta Get the Money” and “Feel Real,” both of which sound like songs torn from the pages of the O’Jays’ catalogue. While nothing here is weighty enough to surpass last year’s “Casanova,” Levert is still coming up with the kind of music that could make a parent proud.
