The Dalkon Shield Victims’ Assn., an educational organization formed to help women injured by the intrauterine device, sponsored a conference in Costa Mesa on Saturday to show victims how to collect on the $2.375-billion settlement against the A.H. Robins Co.

The deadline for women to file claims against the company was recently extended until July 31.

The Dalkon Shield, responsible for deaths and injuries ranging from brain-damaged babies to infertility, was marketed in the early 1970s in 80 countries.

About 3.8 million were sold worldwide, according to the Georgia-based victims’ association, and A.H. Robins Co. and Aetna Casualty and Surety Co. have already paid out $520 million as a result of lawsuits filed by women injured by the device.

Linda Hightower, director of the association, told 30 women at the Red Lion Inn on Saturday that each woman who believes she has been injured by the intrauterine device must take responsibility for her own case by acquiring her complete medical records and contacting a legal representative.

The association is sponsoring another seminar on the Dalkon Shield today at Marina International Hotel in Marina del Rey at 4 p.m.

The association, which can be reached by calling (404) 441-9260, provides information on filing claims, a spokeswoman said.
