WCAC Roundup : Santa Clara Gets Routed By St. Mary’s

Something had to give Friday night at Santa Clara’s Toso Pavilion when the St. Mary’s Gaels played the Santa Clara Broncos. The Gaels were 5-0 in road games while the Broncos were 7-0 at home.

Well, St. Mary’s still is undefeated in away games after routing Santa Clara, 76-48. The Gaels led from start to finish. An early 13-0 run gave them a 17-2 lead with 11:52 to play in the first half. St. Mary’s, which had lost 84 of the previous 118 meetings with Santa Clara, led at halftime, 43-25.

Al Lewis scored 14 points and Erick Newman added 12 to lead St. Mary’s, which remained in a 3-way tie for the West Coast Athletic Conference lead with Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount at 3-0. The Gaels are 15-1 overall. Santa Clara (11-5, 0-3) was led by by Jeffty Connelly with 18 points and Jens Gordon with 17.

USF 63, U. San Diego 58--Both teams were winless in the WCAC going into the game at San Francisco, but Kevin Mouton led the Dons to victory over the Toreros by scoring 20 points.

San Francisco (9-7, 1-2) was playing without star center Mark McCathrion, whose father died earlier in the week. Joel DeBortoli added 14 points for the Dons.
