Japan will start developing a high-speed ship that can cruise at speeds much faster than conventional transport ships and cross the Pacific in about three days, the Transport Ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry said it has obtained a $5.9-million allocation for research and development of the project in fiscal 1989, starting on April 1.

The total outlay for research and development of the project is estimated at about $71 million.

The proposed ship, named the “Techno-Super Liner,” will be powered by one or more gas-turbine water-jet engines. The ship will cruise at 50 knots, or 58 m.p.h.--about 2 1/2 times the speed of conventional container ships.
