NBA Roundup : Jordan Reaches Milestone, but Chicago Loses

Share

Michael Jordan reached 10,000 points faster than any National Basketball Assn. player except Wilt Chamberlain when he hobbled to 33 points Wednesday night at Philadelphia, but it wasn’t really a night for celebration.

Jordan reached the milestone on an 8-foot jumper with 5:39 left, and it gave the Chicago Bulls a 102-101 lead. But the 76ers scored the next 9 points, held Jordan scoreless the rest of the way and went on to beat the Bulls, 120-108.

The 7-foot 2-inch Chamberlain accomplished the feat in only 236 games. Despite a severely bruised knee, Jordan played in his 303rd game. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar needed 318 games. Both Chamberlain and Abdul-Jabbar did it in 4 seasons. Jordan, who missed 64 games because of a foot injury in his second season, is 39 games into his fifth season.

“I would have been very happy to score just 2 points and have us win,” Jordan said. “But I’m proud of the accomplishment. To be compared to Chamberlain is really something. I don’t mind being second; after all, he was about a foot taller.”

Charles Barkley and Ron Anderson led the charge of the 76ers. Barkley had 34 points and 17 rebounds. Anderson, coming off the bench to go 15 for 23, had 32 points.

Detroit 105, Golden State 104--For most of the game at Auburn Hills, Mich., the bigger Pistons dominated Golden State’s smaller lineup. But after Rod Higgins hit 2 consecutive 3-pointers to give the Warriors their first lead with 2:22 to play, it was the littlest Piston, Isiah Thomas, who made the difference.

Manute Bol, 7-7, had blocked the 6-1 Thomas’s path to the basket, but Thomas threw the ball high on the board and it dropped through with 14 seconds left for the winning basket.

Indiana 103, Boston 94--Chuck Person scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter at Indianapolis, and the once mighty Celtics made only 1 field goal in the last 6:30.

The score was tied, 83-83, at the start of that span. By the time Reggie Lewis made a jumper with 2:14 left for the last Celtic field goal, Boston was already 7 points behind.

Utah 107, San Antonio 103--Utah built a 15-point lead in the second quarter at San Antonio but didn’t clinch the victory until Darrell Griffith made a long 3-point shot with 19 seconds remaining.

The Spurs’ All-Star guar, Alvin Robertson, sprained his right knee just before halftime and will be out at least 3 weeks.
