The Calgary Flames, the best home team in the National Hockey League, took on the New York Rangers, the best road team, Thursday night at Calgary, Canada.

And it was the home team that won as the Flames, with 22 shots and 4 goals in the second period, beat the Rangers, 5-3, to improve their home record to 19-1-4.

The Rangers had been 5-0-1 in their last 6 games and saw an 8-game road unbeaten streak come to an end, but at 14-9-5 on the road, they remain tops in the league.

Joe Mullen’s 32nd goal of the season tied the score at 2-2 just 29 seconds into the second period, and Lanny McDonald put Calgary ahead at 4:05.

After New York’s Carey Wilson tied it with a power-play goal 3 minutes later, Gary Suter put the Flames ahead to stay with a power-play goal at 9:36. Loob provided the final goal at 14:31.

A disputed goal by Calgary’s Jim Peplinski that tied the score, 1-1, at 12:14 of the opening period had Ranger Coach Michel Bergeron fuming.

“The puck didn’t go in,” he said. “They don’t want to use the replay. I saw that replay 10 times.”

Boston 4, St. Louis 2--Defenseman Glen Wesley scored the first of Boston’s 3 power-play goals and assisted on another as the Bruins beat the Blues at Boston.

Leading, 2-1, Boston’s Craig Janney, back after missing seven games with a groin injury, scored the game-winner at 10:23 of the second period.

New York Islanders 8, Winnipeg 6--Struggling Mikko Makela had his first multiple-goal game of the season, scoring twice as the Islanders won at Uniondale, N.Y.

Makela scored his 10th and 11th goals for the Islanders, who scored 5 times in the first 13:49 in extending their unbeaten streak to 4-0-1.

Minnesota 5, Quebec 3--Brian Bellows scored 1 goal and 2 assists, and Marc Habscheid and Dave Archibald scored power-play goals in the second period as the North Stars won at Bloomington.

The victory moved the North Stars into a second-place tie with the St. Louis Blues in the Norris Division, marking the first time they have been that high in the division since Dec. 12, 1987.

Washington 1, Philadelphia 0--Washington goaltender Clint Malarchuk made Geoff Courtnall’s early goal stand up by stopping 42 shots as the Capitals ended a 4-game winless streak at Philadelphia.
