From Times staff and wire service reports

Robert S. Shriver III has withdrawn from a group of four investors who agreed to purchase the Baltimore Orioles last year for $70 million, Orioles president Larry Lucchino said.

Shriver--called “the architect of the sale” by his father, R. Sargent Shriver, also an investor--left the group a couple of weeks ago to concentrate on other business interests, Lucchino said Thursday.

The Orioles sale to the elder Shriver, Lucchino and New York financier Eli S. Jacobs cannot become official until approved by three-fourths of the 14 American League owners and a majority of the 12 National League owners. Jacobs is the majority investor in the group.
