Perry Inspires SDSU Rally That Falls Just Short
With Chana Perry sitting on the bench most of the game with severely inflamed Achilles tendons, 14th-ranked San Diego State was defeated, 57-56, by Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference game at Fullerton.
Perry did not enter the game until 12:59 remained with the Aztecs (16-3, 7-3), who have lost two of the past three games, trailing 43-30. Perry scored 17 points, but SDSU fell short when guard Julie Evans’ 8-footer in traffic missed with 4 seconds remaining.
“We didn’t want to risk Chana Perry,” SDSU Coach Earnest Riggins said. “The game was not that important to us. It was the same old story for us. . . . We are kind of beat up, and we’re still not healthy.”
Angelica Jackson scored 15 points for SDSU, but Evans (six points), who is still suffering from the flu, and guard Crystal Lee (3) had just nine points between them.
Gena Miller had 22 points, and Kathy Werth added 17 for unranked Fullerton (13-4, 5-4).
SDSU plays host to UC Santa Barbara Thursday in a Big West game at Peterson Gym.
Lynda Jones scored 13 points, and Paula Mascari added 12 to lead the University of San Diego to a 58-52 West Coast Athletic Conference victory over the University of San Francisco in San Francisco.
USD (7-9, 3-3) led, 26-23, at halftime. Alicie Solis scored 13 to lead USF.
Four players scored in double figures to lead Cal Baptist to a 68-57 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Point Loma Nazarene in Riverside.
Camille Armijo scored 17 points and Shannon Anderson added 13 for PLNC (12-9, 2-3). Sonja Akkerman had 15 points for Cal Baptist (13-6, 4-1), which led, 35-30, at halftime.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Christian Heritage opened the game with 30 consecutive points and ended up with a school-record 135-68 victory over West Coast Christian in a nonleague game at Granite Hills High School.
West Coast Christian (3-21), an NAIA school from Fresno, did not score until 8:53 had expired in the first half. Christian Heritage led, 60-22, at halftime.
The Hawks’ 135 points broke the school record set in a 125-72 victory over Arizona College of the Bible in 1986.
Brad Soucie and David Kirksey scored 28 points each as Christian Heritage (18-3) won its 11th in a row at home. Kirksey was 14 of 15 from the field. Will Cunningham added 22 points for the Hawks.
With starting guard Mark Kraatz on the bench with the flu, replacement Rundy Foster contributed 16 assists, third best in school history.
Lance O’Brien had 22 points for West Coast Christian.
Dominican College started its game with UC San Diego with just 7 players. With 2 minutes left to play, the visitors from San Rafael were down to 4 players, and two of them had 4 fouls.
The four finished the game, but not before UCSD finished off Dominican, 114-78. Twelve players scored for the Tritons (7-12).
Erik Quigley had 20 points and Greg Kund and Steve Whitely added 16 each for UCSD. Greg Kund and Dan Troy had 18 points each for Dominican (9-17).
California Baptist maintained a small lead throughout the final few minutes, hanging on for a 93-91 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Point Loma Nazarene. PLNC (5-14, 3-3) had the ball with 5 seconds left, but Kevin Barbarick missed a 3-point try from the top of the key. Mark Ryan led PLNC with 27 points. Michael Banks scored 26 for Cal Baptist (15-6, 3-3).
BASEBALL
Powered by three home runs in the sixth inning, U.S. International University opened the season with an 8-6 victory over visiting Chapman.
Leading, 2-1, USIU scored 4 runs in the sixth on solo home runs by Scott Coutts and Steve Kreiger and a 2-run shot by Fabian Reyes. Mike Romberg (1-0) pitched 6 innings for the victory. Mike Grahovac had bases-empty home runs in the eighth and ninth for Chapman (0-1).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Jessica Buss defeated Karen Bergan, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, for 20th-ranked San Diego State’s only singles victory in a 6-3 loss to No. 8 Arizona State (2-0) at SDSU (1-1).
MEN’S TENNIS
Dave Stewart and Jose Luis Noriega won their singles matches as host University of San Diego defeated UC Riverside, 8-1.
