Defending champion Joe Holland of Norwich, Vt., jumped 87 and 88 meters to take the lead in the 2-day U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Championships.

Dan O’Meara of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was second with jumps of 83.5 and 84 meters for 203.5 points. Ryan Heckman, a 14-year-old from Winter Park, Colo., was a surprising third in the field of 22 with leaps of 74 and 78.5 meters for 187.7 points.
