World : Britain to Cut Gibraltar Forces

LONDON —
Defense Secretary George Younger said today that Britain plans to withdraw all or most of a 500-strong infantry battalion from the rock colony of Gibraltar.
His statement followed British media reports over the weekend that London plans to pull out 1,000 of its 1,800 troops and close several military facilities in the territory, which Spain claims. In a written message to Parliament, Younger said a “continuing drive for cost-effectiveness” is the reason for the troop reduction.
