Local News in Brief : Murder Suspect to Fight Extradition
An attorney representing Jeffrey Percell, charged with murdering his parents in their Sierra Madre home, said he will fight efforts to have Percell extradited from Vermont, where he is in custody.
Attorney Jerry Schwarz of the Chittenden County public defender’s office said he plans to file a writ questioning the legality of an arrest warrant issued by Vermont Gov. Madeline Kunin. The warrant was issued at the request of Gov. George Deukmejian.
Prosecutor Philip Danielson called the legal challenge a typical ploy to delay extradition, adding that “we don’t see any problem” in sending Percell to California for trial.
Percell, 30, is charged in Pasadena Superior Court with two counts of first-degree murder stemming from the Nov. 15 fatal shootings of his 61-year-old parents, John and Alice Percell. Police said Percell was angry at his parents for alerting authorities to his use of drugs.
After being at large for four weeks, Percell surrendered to police in Burlington, Vt., on Dec. 13.
